LEGO® as company continue to expand not only in creating new sets yearly, but also how they market their brand. In the age or original content it’s been a challenge to create stories based on all-new content. This includes creating a mythology for something it is based from a LEGO® theme.
Ninjago is an original LEGO® creation and has been around for more than a decade expanding into an animated CGI series, and the 2015’s feature length theme. IT is considered one of the longest original content from LEGO® that continue to release its own themed sets and going back to its original roots why it is popular with children and those who have grown up to pass the toys to their own kids. There hasn’t been LEGO® Ninjago published in the realm of the comicbooks or graphic novels until Skybound Entertainment, the creators of The Walking Dead acquiring the rights to produce a new series that would delve through the original characters from world of Ninjago, and also introduce Garmadon to the world! |

Swords and Deep Cuts
For new to the world of Ninjago it would be a surprise that Garmadon #1 is not just written and presented for a younger demographic, but also invites the adults too. Preferably, the parents who might have been reading comicbooks growing up. The series is written and illustrated by Tri Vuong, a Canadian Writer/Illustrator who ius best known for his upcoming graphic novel “Everyday Hero Machine Boy” (also published under Skybound).
Garmadon’s story is set in the present after he left for Ninjago and tries to find himself being along in the jungle that would lead him to a small village, while readers new and old-alike recounts his past through flashbacks as he faces new challenges in the present that also is connected to the stories going back to the pilot episode and the season 10 episode “March of the Oni.”
Starting Pint for All Ages
This All-New LEGO® Ninjago Series is canon to the hit animated series, and it expands the narrative not only Garmadon’s story, but also the other characters that made Ninjago popular among the original creation by The LEGO® Group.
For those new to the mythology, this gives you a jumping point to catch up on what’s been happening to the world of Ninjago, and this is this is solely focus on the story and journey of Garmadon that’s not only for the kids and fans of the franchise. But also opens a new interest to new readers and casual LEGO® fans find out what’s happening next for the featured characters.
Overall this is a good read to jump into the world of Ninjago if you haven’t seen the animated TV series, since the narrative is largely connected to this comicbook. It’s connection is immediately addressed after Garmnaddon’s last appearance from season 10 and where he goes to this new series that spotlight’s his backstory. Tri Vuong’s art style keeps a consistency at the same time gives you a fresh look on how he draws LEGO® minifigures in this perspectives.
But the focus is the story, not the aesthetics or how you’d imagine the characters and place in LEGO® form that must be a challenging process. It’s not smooth sailing from here and on out as this new form of storytelling must balance with catering for younger readers and adults, which will be seen how to address this in the next few issues being an expanded canon from the Ninjago mythology.
