LEGO® Creator 31066 | Space Rover

04.06.2018 – The Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) or lunar rover was one of the transport vehicles that the three Apollo programs (15, 16, and 17) during 1971 and 1972 popularly known as "moon buggy", a play on the word "dune buggy" has become component part that essentially used for space exploration.

LEGO Creator’s Space Shuttle Explorer can be rebuilt into the “Moon Base” or Lunar Outpost and its third build can be recreated into the Space Rover, which is a modern inspiration from the actual LRV that was left on the moon surface.

There have been several iteration and evolution what a Lunar Roving Vehicle can be and it dates back before the Apollo missions. But the very first LRV was transported to the Moon on the Apollo Lunar Module (LM). In popular science fiction it was interpreted with various designs and concept that makes space exploration interesting.

The real LRV is battery powered and uses a different type of tires due to the Moon surface. In science fiction many have taken the design and evolved that some may be fact or mostly fiction. But the LRV will be the benchmark and inspiration for future space vehicles to use in going back to the Moon or travelling further to Mars.

The Martian Ride

This might be the third part of a narrative for the Space Shuttle Explorer being rebuilt in to a Lunar Outpost, which is the “Moon Station” and then gets built again into the “Space Rover” a modern interpretation of the Lunar Roving Vehicle.

The “Space Rover” uses some of the vital parts in putting together the primary build which the Space Shuttle Explorer. It reuses the three boosters into the six rolling wheels of the shuttle that also includes its computer module piece and the cockpit hatch that’s open up as a functional piece.

Exploring Vehicle

In the 2015 film The Martian, Matt Damon’s character can’t stay long in the “Moon Station” as time runs out. He finds that there’s another ship that would take him out of Mars orbit so he uses a solar powered “Space Rover” to find that particular ship.

The build also takes advantage of working arms for drilling and getting enough solar energy to power this six wheel machine. It only accommodates one passenger namely the spaceman who was stranded in the Mars surface who has to live more than three months in the “Moon Station” trying to grow potatoes indoors.

When he got in touch of Earth he was instructed to find the vehicle that will take him out of the red planet’s orbit and the only way to get there is to use the “Space Rover” in getting to that destination, which a narrative that sort of tells you about this set.

Six-Wheel Adventurer

The “Space Rover” can roll in rough terrain it doesn’t exactly roll on smoother surface due to the wheels are smooth and was part of the boosters from the Space Shuttle Explorer, which is ingenious to think that the team behind the Creator set had to make every design viable to the main theme.

It’s very a creative process in putting a set that reuses every component of the primary build, which also sticks to the theme like putting space exploring related kit. This makes the Space Shuttle Explorer one of the underrated sets that gets noticed towards the tail end of its availability that few are slowly taking notice.

“Space Rover” is the third build from the set 31066 3-in-1 Creator theme featuring the Space Shuttle Explorer, which was originally released in 2017 acquired at Kmart for $29.00 AU Dollars.
