This set is named “Barbecue Burn Out” with set no. 60212, it is part of the LEGO® City theme. But this set is aimed at ages 4+ (formerly “LEGO® juniors”) that features a fire engine, and a barbecue area (where the scene takes place, and it includes two Minifigures that sets out the narrative that makes the up the set.
An interesting set shows how this was released in 2019, and it was one of the shelf warmer sets, not because of how the theme looks stereotypical. There have been several LEGO® themed first responder sets dating back to the LEGO® Town series of sets. But this one was not moving because of the price point sold in the Philippines.
The product description and blurb give you an idea of what this set’s story is all about:
“Grab your helmet and fire gear, it’s time to be a LEGO® City hero! Someone wanted a hot dog but forgot to watch their BBQ, and now the tree is on fire! Rush in with the fire truck, extend the bucket, and get to work. Use your trusty axe to chop down the burning branches, fight the fire and save the day! Hurray! For the LEGO® City Fire Department!”
Building the Fire Truck
Putting together this fire truck was pretty straightforward forward that takes 21 steps including the extending ladder-type bucket, where you can mount the Fireman to blast the flames using his bullhorn with a water effect piece that you can attach to simulate that the fireman is using a handheld water hose.
The style and design are simplified since this is a 4+ age set appropriate for kids to build with a solid LEGO® black piece (the truck chassis) that you just build on top of it. The design goes back to the simpler times of how the fire trucks look like in the Town System but uses modern pieces that make the upgrade at the same time nostalgic for those who have become AFOLs of the brand.
Scene of the Fire
Following building the fire truck, you also get to build the tree with a park bench where the barbecue was burning the hot dog in six steps. In the older sets, LEGO® would include a small plate to build on this scene. But modern sets have done away with that minimalism built on top of a 4x4 square green plate.
The built-up tree gives you an idea in the future to make your own set-up for a diorama build with this simple creation. There’s not much leaves enough to make it into a full-blown tree, but this is a budget set so you’ll understand how they made it simple for it to fit into the narrative for this set.
Overall, you can never have too many First Responders to put out a fire if you have accumulated enough of the men and women to put out the fire for just one “Barbecue Burn Out” and this would be a fun build for the kids and some for AFOLs who like to collect Fire Responder-based themed sets and LEGO® has enough of that.
